General description
CD10 is a 100 kDa protein belonging to a family of type II transmembrane metalloproteases which also includes the leukocyte antigens CD13, CD26, CD73 and aminopeptidase. The gene encoding CD10 is located on chromosome 3. CD10 is a zinc-dependent enzyme and is thought to down-regulate cellular responses to peptide hormones (Barclay, 1997). On lymphoid cells, CD10 is expressed on immature T and B precursor cells but is lost as the cells reach maturation. CD10 is, however, re-expressed on proliferating B cells and mature neutrophils (Jones, 1997). Anti-CD10, SS2/36, was included in the Third International Workshop and Conference on Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigens, and studies by a number of laboratories confirmed its reactivity with CD 10 (Majdic, 1987).
